What does therapy have to do with our bodies?

Our bodies can be both a source of joy and heartache for us. While we use them to be close to those we love, to move and enjoy the physical world, we also live in a society that places judgments about who we are and our worth based on what we look like. Disliking how your body looks or how much you weigh can both be a trigger for negative mental health and also a symptom of it. And all of us are influenced by damaging cultural beliefs related to health, weight, and size.

Here at Starks Therapy Group, we take a Health at Every Size (HAES) approach to health and physical wellbeing. HAES is defined by the belief that our health and what we look like are not intrinsically linked – you can’t tell how “healthy” someone is just by looking at them. It also rejects the idea that we should be striving towards a smaller, more toned body – each person deserves to love themselves in their current body. We believe that dieting actually leads to worse health outcomes, both physically and emotionally.

Here at Starks Therapy Group, we believe that no matter what you look like or how much you weigh, you deserve to have a full life and heal from past trauma. Our goal is to help you figure out what beliefs and cultural understandings of weight are impacting your emotional and mental well being in order to help you heal and thrive, no matter what your body size.
